Attorney General Jeff Jackson and other state officials launched an awareness campaign in Wilmington on Tuesday to educate North Carolinians about cryptocurrency ATM scams, which are on the rise and target older citizens.

The scams occur when victims are told to visit crypto ATMs and deposit cash into a crypto account controlled by the scammer. Once deposited, Jackson said it's "extremely difficult to recover the funds," adding that the average amount scammed exceeds $100,000.

Jackson's team plans to work with local law enforcement and businesses to put warning signs near ATMs. He encourages victims to call 211 or local law enforcement and file a complaint with the attorney general's office.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported losing more money to bank transfers and cryptocurrency in 2023 than all other methods combined.

The Democratic National Committee has threatened legal action against the North Carolina State Board of Elections for planning to remove 98,000 registrations from the voter rolls due to insufficient identification, alleging a violation of the National Voter Registration Act.

The letter follows the elections board's unanimous approval of a three-part plan to obtain each voter's driver's license number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. Those voters would be able to cast provisional ballots, which will be counted only if state officials are satisfied that the information is correct.

The DNC argues that states can only remove voters from the rolls if the registrant requests removal, is convicted of a felony, is mentally incapacitated, dies, or moves away.

The state board has until October to resolve the issue before the DNC pursues legal action.

All of North Carolina's Republican U.S. House members defended their support for President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" in a response Tuesday to Gov. Josh Stein's letter urging the state's congressional delegation to reject it.

Stein had warned that Trump's budget would threaten 45,000 jobs and $67 billion in economic activity. He also said it would cut Medicaid, food stamps, and green energy incentives, while increasing the deficit by more than $3 trillion.

Republican House members countered that the bill "restores integrity and sustainability to our healthcare programs," and cited tax cuts and immigration enforcement as additional reasons for their support.

On the Senate side, one of North Carolina's U.S. senators, Republican Ted Budd, voted for Trump's bill. The other, Republican Thom Tillis, voted against it.
