Good Morning! On this day in 1873, the nation's first free kindergarten in the U.S. was opened in Carondelet, Missouri, by educator Susan Blow.  Dolly Parton Dies at 80
Dolly Parton, the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and actress whose larger-than-life persona and six-decade career made her one of America's most beloved entertainers, died peacefully at her Nashville home, her family announced Tuesday. She was 80. The fourth of 12 children raised in rural Tennessee, Parton sold over 100 million records on the strength of hits like Jolene and I Will Always Love You, starred in the hit movie 9 to 5, and built Dollywood into one of the country's most-visited theme parks. Parton was an inspirational figure to many, often focusing on forgiveness and prayer in interviews. President Trump ordered all American flags flown at half-mast for a week, saying, "There has never been anyone like her, and never will." She had faced health setbacks following the death of her husband Carl Dean in March 2025 and canceled a planned Las Vegas residency. Canada Hits Back with 50% TariffsCanada struck back Tuesday, announcing retaliatory tariffs as high as 50% on more than 700 American products, matching President Trump's newest levies "dollar for dollar."
The counter-tariffs cover about $20 billion in U.S. goods, from steel and dairy to appliances, and take effect Sept. 8. The move came after weekend talks collapsed and a fresh round of 50% U.S. tariffs took effect Saturday. Trump has since vowed to double tariffs on Canadian cars, steel, and trucks in January. Trump responded on Truth Social, threatening to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America," saying the U.S. doesn't expect to do "much business with Ontario any longer." |
Study: 1 in 4 Deceased NFL Players Had CTEAt least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and the true rate could be as high as 97.7%, according to a study published in The British Medical Journal. The findings land just as football season is about to kick off across America. The study tracked 1,712 former players who died between 2008 and 2021. Of the 338 who donated their brains, 93.2% were diagnosed with CTE, and nearly 60% of those donors had dementia. By comparison, CTE appears in less than 1% of the general population. Most players in the study competed before 2005, when the disease was first identified in an NFL player, so recent safety reforms may not be reflected in the data.
