A suspicious substance in the mail forced a brief evacuation of the Hamilton County Board of Elections administrative building in Norwood on Saturday morning.

Someone spotted the substance around 10:50 a.m., according to board spokesperson Stacey Moher. Police and a hazmat team evaluated it and cleared the building for re-entry.

The Early Voting Center wasn't affected, and voters kept casting ballots through the scheduled 4 p.m. close. Election Day is Nov. 3.

"The safety of our employees and of the public is our highest priority," Director Sherry Poland and Deputy Director Raquel Burgos said in a statement. Details remain under investigation.

Article Icon 1EPA Releases Toledo Air Data

U.S. EPA air monitoring data from last week's North Toledo chemical leak show elevated concentrations of inhalable particles near the site.

The leak began Oct. 20 when, officials say, an MC Tank Transport employee's error during a transfer set off a reaction in a 5,500-gallon tank of glycidyl methacrylate. Area hospitals treated 57 people for related symptoms.

Officials lifted the evacuation order Oct. 23, and the EPA's mobile lab later found no detectable glycidyl methacrylate in surrounding neighborhoods.

Some residents of the Raintree Village manufactured home community, about half a mile away, still want answers. Environmental testing advocate Scott Smith urged officials to combine their testing data rather than rely on private contractors.

It's the city's second chemical emergency in two months, following an August fire at Brent Industries. The EPA says monitoring will continue.

Shaker Heights has put two historic rapid transit stations on the market for sale or long-term lease, the first time either century-old depot has been available to buy.

The Coventry and Lynnfield stations are the last of their kind in Greater Cleveland outside Tower City, and both have sat empty for about a decade.

The listing pitches the 700- and 1,000-square-foot depots to buyers and tenants as boutique shops, cafés, offices, or studios.

Past tenants include Standard Oil, a floral shop, an insurance agency, a newsstand, a soda shop, and a day spa. You can view the listing here.

Article Icon 1NCSU Fires Head Coach Doeren, GM Vaughn

NC State fired football coach Dave Doeren on Saturday, ending the winningest tenure in Wolfpack history after 14 seasons. The university also fired general manager Andy Vaughn in the wake of Doeren’s dismissal.

Athletic director Boo Corrigan announced the move a day after the Wolfpack fell to 3-4 with a road loss to Stanford, a team picked to finish last in the ACC. Running backs coach Todd Goebbel will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Doeren, 54, went 98-74 and set the program’s all-time wins record, guiding State to 11 bowl games and a 9-4 edge over rival North Carolina. But his teams never played for an ACC title or reached 10 wins in a season.

Corrigan said a national search for the next coach begins immediately. Former NC State quarterback and NFL star Philip Rivers is expected to be in the mix for the vacancy.

Article Icon 1Jury Convicts Olivares in Hedgepeth Case

A Durham County jury on Friday convicted Miguel Salguero-Olivares of first-degree murder, rape, sexual offense, and burglary in the 2012 killing of UNC-Chapel Hill student Faith Hedgepeth.

Superior Court Judge Keith Gregory sentenced him to life in prison without parole, plus consecutive terms on the other counts. Salguero-Olivares is appealing.

Hedgepeth, 19, was found beaten to death in her off-campus Chapel Hill apartment on Sept. 7, 2012, and the case went unsolved for nine years. Salguero-Olivares, 33, was arrested in 2021 after DNA collected during a drunken-driving stop linked him to the scene.

Prosecutors told jurors the forensic evidence was “screaming his name,” pointing to DNA and a palm print found at the scene. Defense attorneys argued investigators had “tunnel vision” and questioned the reliability of the DNA. The defendant did not testify.

Article Icon 1Fall Color Runs Late in NC Mountains

Warm weather has pushed North Carolina’s mountain leaf season about 10 days behind schedule, leaving peak color still rolling across the high country.

In a typical year, color peaks in mid-October between 2,500 and 4,000 feet, and this fall visitors are still finding vivid overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone. Lower elevations should turn next, with with areas below 2,000 feet peaking in early November.

Howard Neufeld, the retired App State biologist known as the “Fall Color Guy,” says September temperatures typically drive the timing: the warmer the month, the later the peak.

Leaf season is the mountains’ busiest tourist stretch, drawing travelers from across the country to towns and trails still recovering from Hurricane Helene. Neufeld and Explore Asheville post weekly color updates to help visitors chase the change.
