Article Icon 1Farm Industry Shrinking, Data Shows

U.S. Census of Agriculture data shows Colorado lost 2,800—or 7.2%—of its farms from 2017 to 2022. During that period, the state's farmland shrank by 1.6 million acres, a 5% drop and the largest acreage decrease nationwide.

Farmers say Colorado's agricultural industry, the state's second-largest economic driver, is shrinking due to stagnant prices, soaring costs, and labor shortages.

Many blame overregulation, arguing that industry-specific state labor laws drive away workers and raise costs. Some operations have turned to automation, replacing laborers with AI technology.

Census data indicates a similar national trend, with the U.S. losing more than 100,000 farms in the same five-year period.

Colorado voters have until 7 p.m. today to return ballots in this year's coordinated election. It's too late to vote by mail, but ballots can still be dropped off at any official drop box or in-person polling center.

The two statewide ballot issues, Propositions LL and MM, would shore up funding for the state's school meals program. Read about them in Colorado's Blue Book.

Locally, many areas will vote on school board, city council, mayoral candidates, and other local offices, alongside local ballot issues, such as the Vibrant Denver bond package.

Over 700,000 Coloradans had returned ballots as of Friday, putting the state on track to hit its highest off-year election turnout since 2019.

Article Icon 1Evergreen Students Thank First Responders

First responders, students, families, and other members of the Evergreen community gathered at a local church last week for a show of gratitude coinciding with National First Responders Day.

A group of local mothers organized the event, delivering 866 handwritten thank-you notes for first responders and 1,134 affirmations for students, all collected in the weeks after the Evergreen High School shooting.

Those honored included the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Evergreen Fire Rescue, school bus drivers, library staff, and others who sheltered fleeing students on Sept. 10.

"We are deeply moved by this outpouring of kindness. Moments like this remind us that healing happens when a community stands together with compassion, courage, and care," the sheriff's office said.
