Article Icon 1Duke Deters Faculty-Media Engagement

Duke University has directed faculty to limit media interactions to research topics and route broader inquiries to central communications, according to internal emails obtained by The Duke Chronicle.

The guidance, sent to the Sanford School of Public Policy and other departments, aims to shield the institution from national scrutiny on politically sensitive issues.

At an October Academic Council meeting, President Vincent Price and Chair Mark Anthony Neal praised faculty for declining comment to a New York Times reporter investigating the federal government's targeting of Duke's diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, describing the approach as avoiding "poking the bear."

Civil liberties advocates, including the ACLU of North Carolina, have expressed concern over the potential chilling of free expression at private institutions like Duke, which face fewer First Amendment constraints. Price emphasized behind-the-scenes advocacy over public statements as a way to protect the university's interests.

Article Icon 1Charitable Donations Rebound Across NC

Charitable donations in North Carolina surged to $48.14 million during the 2024-25 fiscal year, marking a $21 million rebound from the previous year's slump of just over $27 million, according to the North Carolina Secretary of State's Charitable Solicitation Licensing Division Annual Report.

This uptick, while still below the 2022-23 peak of $58 million, reflects an improvement in charitable impact, with 74.53% of funds reaching charitable programs—up nearly 14 percentage points from the prior year.

The recovery resulted in $35.88 million going directly to charities, with national and multistate campaigns directing nearly 78% of funds to charitable services. Four economic development groups contributed over $10.8 million in gross receipts.

Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall praised the "incredible response" to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in western counties and urged donors to consult the report for vetting nonprofits.

Article Icon 1NC Airports Gear Up for Holiday Travel

As Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday travel season, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) expects nearly 2 million passengers through the start of the new year, about 10% fewer than last year's record. CLT's busiest days are projected to be Saturday, Sunday, and Monday after Thanksgiving.

Officials urge travelers to arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international. Extra staff, real-time app updates, and full coordination with the Transportation Security Administration and Federal Aviation Administration aim to keep lines moving smoothly.

Meanwhile, Raleigh-Durham International Airport saw heavy crowds Monday as a record-breaking Thanksgiving travel period began, with AAA predicting 81.8 million travelers nationwide and more than 6 million flying. The FAA expects the busiest holiday in 15 years, with yesterday as the peak day.
