Article Icon 1Tornado Hits Harris County

A tornado with winds over 110 mph touched down in northwest Harris County Monday, damaging more than 100 homes and knocking out power to more than 27,000 customers. No injuries have been reported.

A funnel cloud was spotted around 1:30 p.m. and touched down about 10 minutes later, inflicting significant damage in the Spring and Klein areas. A building at the county's 44-acre ESD 11 campus "folded like tissue paper" and was "completely demolished."

Cy-Fair Fire Department firefighters took shelter in a resident's garage, and a Cypress teen at home alone rode out the storm in a closet with the family dog. "The house just started shaking, and I heard a bunch of things falling, and the wind was insane," Tyce Beck said.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say tornadoes aren't uncommon for Southeast Texas in November, a "secondary severe season heading into the winter" when cold fronts collide with coastal humidity. The state has asked residents whose homes were damaged to fill out a survey to facilitate recovery efforts.

Article Icon 1Family Pleads for Son's Release from Mexican Prison

A 23-year-old from Hallsville has been detained in a Mexican prison since March after he got turned around in New Mexico and accidentally crossed the border. After months of working with Mexican authorities, his family is reaching out to the media and lawmakers to bring him home.

Caden Hawkins was returning from a job site in Tempe, Arizona, when his GPS routed him off I-10 west of El Paso. He was arrested after police found three loaded guns and 400 rounds of ammunition in his truck. The Mexican government doesn't allow foreigners to carry firearms.

Caden's family paid Mexican lawyers $25,000 to get him released, but the lawyers failed to show up for a hearing in April. The family is paying $1,000 a week for Caden's necessities, protection from other inmates, and brief calls home.

State Rep. Jay Dean (R-Longview) said Caden is "being held as a cash asset for a corrupt federal judge" and is calling on President Trump and others to demand his release. "I want this kid home by Christmastime to be home with his family," he said.

"Please give me my baby back, he does not deserve this," said Caden's mother, April Thomas. "This has gone long enough."

Article Icon 1Polls Show Tight Race for U.S. Senate

Recent polling shows U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt are locked in a tight three-way race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

A poll conducted last week by a pro-Hunt super PAC shows Paxton leading with 36%, followed by Hunt with 26% and Cornyn with 25%. Earlier this month, a poll commissioned by the Senate Leadership Fund—which has endorsed Cornyn—showed the incumbent leading with 32%, followed by Paxton at 31% and Hunt with 21%.

President Trump has not decided whether to weigh in on the race, according to a White House official. Polling suggests the race is headed for a runoff, and some Republicans are worried a prolonged primary campaign would benefit Democrats.

Polling for the Democratic nomination is not as widely available. An October survey found U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett—who has hinted she might jump into the race—leads the field with 31%. State Rep. James Talarico and former Congressman Beto O'Rourke both garnered 25%, while 13% said they support U.S. Rep. Colin Allred.
