Good Morning! On this day in 1861, The Battle of Fort McRee was fought on Florida's Panhandle between the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War. Union gunships from Fort Pickens bombarded Fort McRee. The Confederates fired back, leading to an artillery duel lasting over eight hours.

Deputy Shot, Killed in Indian River County

One deputy was killed, and a second deputy and a locksmith were wounded after a man who was being evicted from his mother's home opened fire on them in Indian River County on Friday.

"We've had seven calls to this residence, all this month," Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said. "Almost all of them from the mother calling about him and her decision to ultimately evict him."

Deputy Terri Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the department, was shot and killed inside the residence, while a second deputy was wounded in the shoulder. The locksmith was in critical condition and undergoing surgery as of Friday afternoon.

The alleged shooter, Michael Halberstam, had recently been terminated from his job at UPS, had a previous narcotics charge, and had been posting "some negative items" about the Indian River Sheriff's Office on a social media account.

Wildfires, Drought Spread Across North Florida

North Florida's drought has expanded, bringing with it increased fire danger. A Level 5 exceptional drought now stretches from South Georgia to I-10, covering the area from Thomasville to Tallahassee.

Wildfires were reported in Escambia County, Okaloosa County, Suwannee County, Putnam County, Alachua County, Marion County, and Hardy County just east of Tampa on Friday, though most are now 100% contained.

In addition, Calhoun County announced a ban on all open burning on Friday.

"This action is intended to protect lives and property due to our extremely dry conditions, elevated fire danger, and reduced chance for meaningful rainfall in the near future," Calhoun County Emergency Management wrote on social media.

73 Florida Hospitals Receive "A" Rating

Leapfrog Group has published its Fall 2025 Hospital Safety Grades for 192 hospitals across the state, with 73 receiving "A" ratings. The report is a biannual ranking that assigns grades to general hospitals in the U.S. based on their ability to protect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

An additional 36 Florida hospitals received a "Straight A" ranking, meaning they earned an A grade for more than two years in a row.

Only one hospital, Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, received an "F" rating.
