More Expulsions Loom in Congress

Congress shifted its ethic focus today to two Florida lawmakers in the wake of Monday’s announcements that embattled Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales, both facing sexual misconduct charges, would leave the House.

Next to face possible expulsion from the House over ethics issues are Florida Reps. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat, and Cory Mills, a Republican.

A House Ethics subcommittee found Cherfilus-McCormick guilty of funneling $5 million in COVID relief funds to her campaign. The panel is set to announce recommended sanctions at an April 21 hearing.

Mills is under ethics investigation on allegations including a variety of misconduct, all of which he denies. His case timeline remains unclear.

New Iran Talks Could Come This Week

A new round of in-person peace talks between the U.S. and Iran could happen as early as this week, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. Iran's nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remain the key sticking points.

President Trump told reporters that Iran had called and suggested talks could resume in Pakistan within days. The two-week ceasefire expires April 21, adding urgency to the diplomatic push.

Meanwhile, the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports continued, with Central Command saying no ships made it past in the first 24 hours, and six merchant vessels turned back.

Separately, Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors held their first direct talks since 1993 at the State Department on Tuesday, with Secretary of State Rubio calling it a "historic opportunity" toward ending Hezbollah's influence.

Husband Released in Bahamas Disappearance

Bahamian police released Michigan man Brian Hooker on Monday without charges after questioning him for days about the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, during a sailing trip in the Bahamas.

Hooker told authorities his wife fell from an 8-foot dinghy near Elbow Cay on April 4 as the couple headed back to their sailboat. He says she was wearing an engine safety lanyard that shut off the engine when she went overboard, leaving him to paddle to shore for seven hours before reaching a marina and alerting police.

Lynette's daughter has publicly questioned her stepfather's account, calling her mother an experienced swimmer and suggesting the incident was preplanned.

The U.S. Coast Guard has opened a criminal investigation, and Bahamian police say Hooker remains a suspect.
