Supreme Court Tosses Louisiana Voting Map
The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down Louisiana's House map by a 6-3 vote, clearing a path for GOP redistricting gains across the South. Louisiana had been forced by a federal judge in 2024 to add a second majority-black district under the Voting Rights Act. The Trump administration challenged it as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, and the Court on Wednesday agreed, despite the three liberal justices saying it would demolish the impact of the Voting Rights Act. The decision arrives during a redistricting war. Virginia's Supreme Court on Tuesday let stand an order blocking certification of a Democrat-favored map approved by voters last week. And in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a new map Monday that could net Republicans four additional House seats. |
Fed Holds Rates Steady at Powell's Last Meeting
The Federal Reserve on Wednesday held rates steady at 3.5%-3.75% in Chair Jerome Powell's final meeting, with four officials dissenting, the most since October 1992. Hours earlier, the Senate Banking Committee voted 13-11 to advance Kevin Warsh's nomination as Powell's successor to the full Senate. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., dropped his opposition after the Justice Department closed its probe into Powell last Friday. Powell's chairmanship ends May 15, but it's unclear how long he'll stay on as a Fed governor. That term runs through January 2028. |
NASA Chief: Make Pluto a Planet Again
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told a Senate panel Tuesday he wants to "make Pluto a planet again," and is preparing papers to revisit the dwarf planet ruling. The remark came at the end of a budget hearing, when Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., asked about Pluto. Its discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh, was a self-taught Kansas farm boy. The International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto in 2006, ruling that planets must clear their orbits of other objects. Final say belongs to that body, not NASA. Tombaugh discovered the icy world in 1930 from Lowell Observatory in Arizona, the only American to ever discover a planet—if it is one.
