Fifth Circuit Clears Texas Immigration Law
Texas can now enforce Senate Bill 4, the 2023 law allowing state police to arrest people suspected of crossing the border illegally, after a federal appeals court lifted the block on Friday. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 10-7 that the plaintiffs, including immigrant advocacy groups Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center and American Gateways, plus El Paso County, lacked legal standing to challenge the law. The court vacated the preliminary injunction without ruling on the underlying constitutional questions. SB4 creates a state misdemeanor for illegal border crossings and allows magistrate judges to order those arrested to return to Mexico. The law briefly took effect for about nine hours in 2024 before courts blocked it again. With the injunction now lifted, state enforcement can begin while remaining legal challenges continue. |
Corpus Christi Braces for Water Emergency
Corpus Christi's city council will vote on Tuesday on a plan that would require a water usage cut of at least 25% as a historic drought has drained the city's main reservoirs to just 8% of capacity. City staff said a Stage 1 emergency could arrive as early as September without significant rainfall. That threshold is triggered when water supply is projected to fall short of demand within 180 days. Industrial users, including ExxonMobil, Valero, and Occidental, now consume roughly 60% of the city's water supply, a consequence of years of efforts to attract refineries and petrochemical facilities to Corpus Christi Bay. The average residential customer uses about 7,000 gallons per month; the proposed cap of 5,250 gallons would affect roughly 30% of households. City Council member Carolyn Vaughn said, "Everybody's going to have to make sacrifices." |
Iran War Impacts Texas Farmers
Texas farmers are seeing rising costs due to Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which choked off a key shipping lane for fertilizer. Bank of America estimates some fertilizers have already risen 30% to 40% since the Strait closed, with urea costs jumping 47% since late February. Panhandle cotton growers and Rio Grande Valley produce farmers already operate on razor-thin margins, and now they're staring down 40% increases on nitrogen products. In addition, farm diesel prices have climbed 46% since late February. Analysts expect food prices to follow as higher input costs work their way through the supply chain. |
