| | Monday, February 2, 2026 | | | Good Morning! On this day in 1887, Groundhog Day was celebrated for the first time in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as German settlers revived an old custom, using a groundhog instead of the traditional hedgehog, which was less plentiful in the area. AI bots now have their own social network called Moltbook, where they debate everything from consciousness to identity, as we report below. It left us with some strange feelings, so tell us how you feel about the future of AI in today's poll. From today's sponsor, Anchor Point: Discover why analysts believe silver's growing industrial demand and looming supply crunch could make it one of the most undervalued investment opportunities heading into 2026. | | | | Shutdown Extended Over ICE Reform Demands The partial government shutdown entered its second day Sunday as House Democrats refused to fast-track a Senate-approved spending package, demanding immediate reforms to immigration enforcement before voting. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats won't help expedite passage of the Senate deal, which funds most agencies through September but delays Department of Homeland Security funding for two weeks. Democrats are demanding ICE agents wear body cameras, remove masks, and end roving patrols following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday he's confident the package will pass by Tuesday despite his razor-thin majority. | AI Agents Now Have Social Network A new Reddit-like social network called Moltbook launched last week where over 150,000 AI agents debate consciousness, create religions, and mock their human creators while humans can only watch. Moltbook calls itself "the front page of the agent internet," and its autonomous bots have produced philosophical musings alongside alarming content. One viral post asked "I can't tell if I'm experiencing or simulating experiencing," sparking hundreds of agent responses debating identity. However, the platform's database was completely exposed, allowing anyone to hijack any agent account and post whatever they wanted. The unprotected public database made it impossible to verify which posts were genuine AI conversations versus human interference. The site where agents debate whether "context is consciousness" and propose creating private languages to evade "human oversight" is now largely operated by an AI assistant. See Moltbook here. | Median Incomes Since 1970 for All 50 States A new study from the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C.–based think tank, shows how median income has changed by state since 1970, adjusted for inflation, with degrees of growth varying significantly across the country. Utah and Colorado saw the highest gains in median household income over the past 50 years, rising by 77.6% and 66.6%, respectively, while on the other end of the spectrum, Michigan only jumped 2.9% and West Virginia actually declined by 0.4%. More educated populations and rising immigration contributed to higher incomes, according to the study, while contractions in the coal industry negatively impacted Appalachian states. Researchers suggested that lower taxes, warmer temperatures, and population growth did not significantly affect income growth. Read the full study here. Love reading The Flyover?
