$1.25B Magnet Plant Coming to Texas

Las Vegas-based MP Materials, the country's only operator of a rare-earth mining and processing facility, is building a $1.25 billion factory in Northlake to produce neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets.

Located on 120 acres in the AllianceTexas industrial complex, the "10X" campus is expected to create over 1,500 jobs by the time it's completed in 2028. "Hardworking Texans will advance America's semiconductor manufacturing independence," said Governor Greg Abbott in a statement.

The company secured an incentives package of about $200 million over the next decade from Northlake, Denton County, and the state, including grants of $12.9 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund and $53.5 million from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund.

The new factory was part of the U.S. government's agreement to purchase $400 million of the company's preferred stock. "10X is about building industrial strength at a scale the United States has not seen in generations," said founder and CEO James Litinsky.

New State Park Opens Sunday

Sunday marks the opening of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, the first new state park in 18 years. Situated on 4,871 acres of former ranchland in Strawn, the park boasts 16 miles of hiking trails, a 90-acre lake, and RV and tent camping.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased land for the park in 2011, and development was funded by revenue from the Sporting Goods Sales Tax, federal grants, and $10 million in private philanthropy. Construction delays pushed back the park's anticipated 2023 opening.

"Folks around here are anxious to see this place opened," said park superintendent James Adams, who highlighted the park's wild west feel despite its proximity to I-20. Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks, called the park's opening a "tremendous moment" for the agency.

Some finishing touches are still being completed. A grand opening ceremony will be held later this spring.

Go Texan Day

Today is Go Texan Day, the unofficial start of Houston's rodeo season. Folks decked out in their best Western wear will participate in festivities across the city in anticipation of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's kickoff on Monday.

The Rodeo Roundup is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hermann Square, where visitors can get free chopped barbecue sandwiches, take a photo with a longhorn steer, and listen to live music and the reading of the Go Texan Day proclamation.

More than 2,000 people participating in a dozen regional trail rides will arrive at Memorial Park this afternoon. Tomorrow, they'll ride in the Downtown Rodeo Parade.

At NRG Stadium, more than 250 teams will compete in the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, with winners determined by a panel of judges. Spectator tickets, which include a plate of barbecue and fixings, are $30 for adults and $10 for children.

Schools, businesses, and organizations are invited to participate in the annual Go Texan Day Contest by uploading a 60-second or shorter YouTube video highlighting the day's activities. Winners will be announced on March 11.
