Florida CFO Investigates School Boards

Florida's Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia announced on Wednesday that the Florida Agency for Fiscal Oversight (FAFO) will investigate school boards to identify needless spending of tax dollars.

"School boards should not be given a 'free pass' for their excessive and wasteful spending of your tax dollars," Ingoglia said.

He plans to create a methodology to compare the growth in school budgets to that of the student populations they serve.

In December 2025, Ingoglia suggested codifying FAFO in a Florida statute to increase accountability and transparency in local government and make the effort a long-term, permanent initiative.

First Execution Date of 2026 Set

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant on Friday for Ronald Palmer Heath, 64. His execution date is set for Feb. 10.

Heath was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery with a death weapon, and multiple forgery charges in 1990 in the death of a traveling salesman.

DeSantis signed off on a record 19 executions last year, with Florida holding 40% of the 47 executions that took place nationwide.

Five Rattlesnake Hotspots in Florida

WorldAtlas recently released a list of five rattlesnake hotspots in Florida, with Everglades National Park topping the list.

Also on the list was Big Cypress National Preserve in South Florida's Everglades. And sometimes, the snakes don't stay tucked away: last year, hikers went viral after capturing video of a massive rattlesnake in Immokalee, about 40 miles northwest of the Everglades.

In the panhandle, Apalachicola National Forest, with its mix of pine woodlands, wet prairies, and swamps, also houses a large number of rattlesnakes.

Rounding out the list was Withlacoochee State Forest and Ocala National Forest in Central Florida. The city of Ocala had an incident in October 2025, when a veteran's service dog was bitten by a rattlesnake and survived after emergency treatment.
