NCSBOE Cuts Sunday Early Voting, Campus Sites

The North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBOE) voted Tuesday to eliminate Sunday early voting hours in five counties: Wayne, Harnett, Brunswick, Craven, and Greene.

The move follows an August vote approving cuts to Sunday voting in Davidson and Union counties for municipal elections, at the request of those counties.

The board also rejected proposed early voting sites at N.C. A&T State University, UNC-Greensboro, Elon University, and Western Carolina University for the March 2026 primaries. The decisions, backed by the board's Republican majority, apply to the Feb. 12-28 early voting period. The board cited staffing challenges, logistics, parking issues, and costs as reasons for the cuts.

Meanwhile, State Auditor Dave Boliek requested that the board investigate voter registrations using nonresidential addresses, after Republican U.S. Senate candidate Margot Dupre's Mecklenburg County registration listed a UPS Store address instead of her home address.

Murder Suspect's Release, Mental Health Probed

North Carolina lawmakers are scrutinizing the state's mental health and involuntary commitment systems following the Jan. 3 murder of Ravenscroft School teacher Zoe Welsh. Ryan Camacho, 36, is charged with murder and felony burglary after allegedly breaking into Welsh's Raleigh home and fatally assaulting her.

Camacho, previously diagnosed with schizophrenia, has a 20-year criminal history and was found incompetent to stand trial in a prior case. Prosecutors sought his involuntary commitment last year, but Judge Louis Meyer denied the request, leading to Camacho's release.

The House Select Committee on Involuntary Commitment and Public Safety met Wednesday to examine the systemic gap that allowed for Camacho's release. Lawmakers heard from experts on outpatient treatment, judicial standards for commitment, and measures that were effective elsewhere.

The case has led lawmakers to question how individuals deemed incompetent yet not subject to commitment remain free.

JetZero Secures $175M for Prototype Push

California-based startup JetZero has secured $175 million in financing to speed development of its revolutionary blended-wing-body aircraft, the Z4, to be built in Greensboro.

Led by B Capital and including United Airlines Ventures, RTX Ventures, Northrop Grumman, and 3M Ventures, the investment pushes the company's total funding and commitments beyond $1 billion. It also accelerates work on the full-scale Z4 demonstrator—a midmarket "all-wing" design for up to 250 passengers with a 5,000-nautical-mile range.

The aircraft promises at least 30% aerodynamic improvement over traditional tube-and-wing jets. This could cut fuel use by up to 50% per passenger mile and support aviation's net-zero emissions goals by 2050.
