A bipartisan task force, co-chaired by Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt and Sen. Jim Burgin, released its 2025 year-end report outlining six recommendations to expand child care access statewide.

Gov. Josh Stein established the task force in March 2025. The panel finalized its recommendations in June after meetings with guest experts helped shape potential solutions to the state’s child care challenges.

The year-end report outlines actionable steps for the six recommendations, including subsidized care for childcare teachers, setting a statewide subsidy reimbursement rate floor, and creating a childcare endowment.

The task force will continue developing detailed plans to implement the recommendations.

Article Icon 1Family Awarded in Wrongful Death Settlement

The family of Mark Garrity Jr., who was stabbed to death in April 2023 at a Raleigh convenience store, received $1.3 million in a settlement with the defendants.

Garrity was stabbed at Taz’s Supermarket, a store that was the site of significant criminal activity, with police receiving over 900 calls in five years leading up to his death. Garrity was stabbed after an altercation with the owner of the store, Taiseer Zarka. Zarka was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to at least five years in prison.

Garrity’s parents filed the lawsuit after the verdict, saying Mark’s death was murder. The lawsuit was filed against Taiseer Zarka, his company Jasmen Corporation, and the owner of the building, Phillip Horwitz.

The family said the settlement underscores the importance of adequate security measures for businesses.

Article Icon 1NC Woman Sues Former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema

A North Carolina woman filed a lawsuit under the state’s alienation of affection law, alleging former Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema had an affair with her then-husband that led to the breakup of their marriage.

According to the lawsuit, Heather and Matthew Ammel were married and living with their three children in North Carolina in 2022 when Sen. Sinema hired Matthew to work on her security detail. He later became a defense and national security fellow on Sinema’s U.S. Senate staff in 2024.

Heather claims that, in early 2024, she discovered romantic and lascivious messages Matthew had exchanged with Sinema on the Signal app, discussing such topics as therapeutic uses of psychedelic drugs and sexual positions.

The 15-page complaint, filed last September in Moore County Superior Court, moved to federal court after Sinema’s lawyers removed the case from state jurisdiction.
