Good Morning! On this day in 1962, Chubby Checker's The Twist hit No. 1 on the U.S. singles charts for the second time. It first went to No. 1 in 1960, and in 1962 became the first record in American chart history by the same artist to top the charts on two separate occasions.

Trump Adds Iran Tariffs as Protests Grow

President Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods from any nation doing business with Iran, targeting major trading partners like China, Brazil, Turkey, and Russia, to pressure Tehran over deadly nationwide protests.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Iran called seeking to negotiate, with a meeting being set up, though he added that "we may have to act" before then as his administration weighs military strikes and providing Elon Musk's Starlink internet access to bypass the regime's blackout.

The Iranian protests have so far resulted in over 550 deaths, more than 500 of them protestors and the rest security personnel, and over 10,600 people arrested since Dec. 28, while photos captured grief-stricken families searching through rows of bodies in black bags outside Tehran's Kahrizak Forensic Medical Center.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed the situation was "under total control" while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned that "in the case of an attack on Iran, the occupied territories (Israel) as well as all U.S. bases and ships will be our legitimate target."

GOP Senators Push Back on Powell Probe

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis said he will block any Trump appointees to the Federal Reserve following revelations the Justice Department is investigating Jerome Powell for potential perjury charges over his congressional testimony about the Fed's $2.5 billion headquarters renovation.

GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski also expressed her opposition, calling the investigation "nothing more than an attempt at coercion" after speaking with Powell on Monday morning.

The Republican opposition complicates replacing Powell, whose term as chair expires in May. The Senate Banking Committee has 13 Republicans and 11 Democrats, meaning even one defection creates a stalemate.

Trump is expected to interview BlackRock's Rick Rieder this week as the fourth and final candidate for Fed chair, joining finalists former Federal Reserve Board Governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher Waller.

List: World's Largest Proven Oil Reserves

Venezuela holds the world's largest proven oil reserves at 303 billion barrels, accounting for about 17% of the global total and well ahead of Saudi Arabia's 267 billion barrels.

Despite its vast reserves, Venezuela ranked just 21st in oil production in 2024 at about 960,000 barrels per day, down from its 1970s peak of 3.5 million barrels per day.

Decades of mismanagement, underinvestment, and international sanctions have constrained the country's oil sector, with most reserves concentrated in the Orinoco Belt where deposits are predominantly heavy crude that's more expensive to produce.
