Ron DeSantis called for a ban on congressional stock trading on Tuesday and renewed his call for legislation imposing term limits on members of Congress. DeSantis was joined in Clearwater by several officials, including U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who represents Pinellas County. Luna filed a discharge petition in December, calling for legislation to curb stock trading by members of Congress. The governor proposed a measure aimed at holding elected officials accountable. Candidates filing to run for federal office in Florida would have to check a box indicating that they will not engage in stock trading if elected. DeSantis said that, given her trading returns, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should be hired to run Florida's pension fund, noting that she and other ranking members often outperform market legends like Warren Buffett. | Florida Looking to Charge Maduro Gov. Ron DeSantis also said on Tuesday that the state is looking into bringing charges against deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by the U.S. in a military strike on Saturday. In response to questions at the press conference at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Clearwater, DeSantis accused Maduro of allowing Venezuelan gangs to bring drugs to the U.S. and "(emptying) his prisons" to send criminals across the southern border and into Florida. The governor said the charge of sending prisoners illegally into Florida is not part of the federal indictment. DeSantis said Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier's office is reviewing state statutes and urged followers on social media to "Stay tuned..." | Third Detention Center Awaits Approval In another major update, Gov. DeSantis said that the state is playing its part to enforce the country's immigration policies and has made close to 20,000 arrests. Speaking from the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson on Monday, which has been dubbed "Deportation Depot," the governor said that no other state has done more to support immigration enforcement. Since September, the Sanderson facility alone has sent 93 deportation flights carrying nearly 3,000 people. DeSantis said there have been 10,000 arrests of people in the U.S. illegally in Florida through Operation Tidal Wave, a state initiative with federal law enforcement. Local law enforcement made an additional 10,000 arrests. Under the state initiative, 63% of those arrested had a criminal record or conviction. Florida is awaiting federal approval to open an additional detention center near Pensacola. | | | Flying together with our sponsor Remove your personal data from Google search results Anyone can find your sensitive information with a Google search—phone number, home address, date of birth, and Social Security number.
