A shelter-in-place order was imposed and later lifted at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa on Wednesday after a suspicious package was found outside a gate. The package was reported to contain "possible energetic materials," which could mean explosives, fuels, or propellants.

It was the second security incident this week, after another suspicious package was found at MacDill's visitor center on Monday, which led to the closure of the center for about six hours.

On Tuesday, a Force Protection Condition (FPCON) Charlie, a heightened security posture, was issued for the base and remains in place.

The threats came less than a week after the base announced the loss of three members of the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, among the six airmen killed on a KC-135 Stratotanker during Operation Epic Fury on March 12.

President Trump attended the dignified transfer for the remains of the six service members returning to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday. At the same time, the remains of U.S. Army soldier Cody Khork from Winter Haven were returned to Polk County. He will be buried this weekend.

Florida Republicans in the U.S. House are escalating pressure on the U.S. Senate, vowing to block legislation until the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is passed.

U.S. Rep. Randy Fine (District 6, Atlantic Coast) took the lead in writing a letter, signed by 25 Republicans, pledging to vote against all Senate-originated bills. "Consider this our filibuster," the letter stated, noting that the bill is President Trump's top priority.

The group of House conservatives called on Senate leadership to pursue a talking filibuster to avoid requiring the 60-vote threshold and pass the bill with a simple majority.

U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (District 13, Tampa area) joined 40 Republicans in voting against the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act, a bipartisan bill that still passed on a 345-41 vote. She called the effort a stand for voter ID and election integrity.

Florida Reps. Aaron Bean, Byron Donalds, Cory Mills, and Jimmy Patronis joined Fine and Luna in backing the blockade strategy.

Article Icon 1Florida Sheriffs Debate Immigration

A back-and-forth over illegal immigration and who should and should not be arrested unfolded this week after a public meeting on Monday of Florida's Immigration Enforcement Council.

Four sheriffs and four police chiefs appointed by state leaders comprise the council. The chair, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, said he wanted to write a letter to President Trump and Congress urging them to focus deportations on illegal immigrants with criminal records.

"I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri responded to Judd. He noted, however, that it is Congress's job to change the law.

Some Florida sheriffs disagreed with Judd. T.K. Waters, the Jacksonville sheriff who sits on the council, pushed back on officials who are resisting mass deportation, saying he does not "endorse the comments made by others."
