No. 1 Duke Advances to Elite 8

The Duke Blue Devils, the No. 1 overall seed, advanced to the Elite Eight with an 80-75 victory over No. 5 seed St. John's on Friday. Duke will face No. 2 seed UConn today at 5:05 p.m.

Duke guard Caleb Foster, who suffered a fracture in his right foot three weeks ago and underwent surgery one day later, came off the bench to score 11 second-half points.

In the women’s bracket, the No. 3 Blue Devils face the No. 1 seed UCLA today at 3 p.m. The Bruins dominated the Devils 89-59 in a regular-season meeting on Nov. 27.

Also on the women’s side, No. 4 seed North Carolina lost to No. 1 seed and defending NCAA champion UConn in the Sweet 16 on Friday, 63-42.

Man Wanted in Homicide Captured After Chase

A Georgia man wanted in a homicide was taken into custody after a car chase on Friday, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

On Thursday, authorities tried to stop Roy "JoJo" Holloway, who was driving a car connected to a Georgia homicide. Holloway fled on foot and ran into the woods before being captured in the surrounding area on Friday.

The Davidson County Rescue Squad said its drone team assisted the Lexington Police Department and Davidson County Sheriff’s Highway Patrol in locating the suspect in a “jump and run” incident.

Dawson County (Georgia) deputies responded to a shooting on March 24. The victim, later identified as Justin Thompson, 38, of Dawsonville, died of his injuries.

Two Sentenced in Charlotte Car Theft Ring

The U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina warned that a Charlotte-based car theft ring highlights a sophisticated, multi-state operation that targets luxury cars.

Andre Lamar Sumner, 43, and Erren Woodson, 40, both of Charlotte, were convicted of participating in a luxury vehicle theft operation fueled by drug trafficking and sentenced to at least four years in prison.

Federal prosecutors said from 2022 until this year, the pair worked with others to buy and sell high-end cars that were stolen from dealerships, rental car companies, and private owners across the country.

A team of U.S. attorneys has charged 16 people in similar cases across nine states.
