Good Morning! On this day in 1990, the execution of Jesse Joseph Tafero for the 1976 killings of two law enforcement officers went awry. It preceded several states' decisions to abolish the electric chair. Happy Star Wars Day! May 4th celebrates the movie franchise and all that has evolved since the original Star Wars movie was released in May 1977, based on the famous quote, “May the Force be with you.” Throughout the state, you can find celebrations: Central Florida, Disney World, Panama City, Fort Myers, and Ocala. As a Christian, you shouldn't be getting most of your news from social media. It’s designed to trigger your emotions, not inform your faith. That’s why we read The Pour Over. Court Upholds Florida’s Citizen Initiative Restrictions
A federal judge upheld Florida’s new ballot initiative restrictions, ruling that the new registration requirements, deadlines, fines, and criminal penalties do not violate constitutional free speech protections. The lawsuit was first filed by Florida Decides Healthcare (FDH) just days after Gov. Ron DeSantis finalized the new restrictions in May 2025. FDH has been campaigning to expand the state Medicaid program since 2018, but has yet to meet the state's ballot qualification requirements. The judge ruled that the listed requirements fall within lawmakers’ authority to regulate the citizen initiative process. The ruling emphasized the state’s interest in election integrity, though opponents are considering an appeal amid ongoing legal challenges. The decision rejected challenges from advocacy groups that said the law makes it harder for initiatives to qualify for the ballot and increases costs. The judge acknowledged the concerns, but said those are policy issues, not constitutional violations. |
Criminal Probe into Sloth World Deaths
Attorney General James Uthmeier said his office is assisting with an ongoing criminal investigation into the deaths of over 30 sloths at the now-defunct Sloth World attraction in Orlando, and that a statewide prosecutor will assist with the case. The probe follows reports that the animals were stored in makeshift warehouses under poor conditions during the construction of the attraction. The Central Florida Zoo confirmed that another rescued sloth, Habanero, died despite efforts to rehabilitate the remaining survivors of the group. The company’s now-defunct website had promised customers an up-close viewing encounter with sloths for $49, and had been preselling tickets and merchandise for months. Veterinary teams continue to closely monitor the remaining sloths, with two still in guarded condition. |
‘Polk Around’ Sting Leads to 260+ Arrests
The Polk County Sheriff's Office announced a massive undercover operation, dubbed "Polk Around and Find Out," resulting in the arrest of 266 individuals, including 34 who were in the U.S. illegally. The multi-agency sting targeted human trafficking and online solicitation of minors, with Sheriff Grady Judd reporting that several suspects brought their own children to the undercover meeting locations. Authorities said 127 individuals were screened to assess whether they were victims of trafficking or coercion. Seven people were identified as potential victims and were provided with services. The operation included the arrest of a man frequently referred to as a "Santa Claus" figure in his local community. "Now, you've watched all of this national media stuff and, 'Oh, how horrible ICE is.' Well, that's just absolutely unequivocally false," Judd said. "ICE has been nothing but the best partner we could ever ask for as we worked together to ensure that the people of Florida, and the United States, are safe.” |
