Ron DeSantis signed five more new state laws, including a sweeping bill to modernize the Sunshine State's rulemaking process, increase transparency, reduce bureaucratic delays, and increase public engagement. The DOGE-like legislation imposes a mandatory five-year review cycle for all agency rules and enforces faster, more transparent procedures for issuing new ones, with penalties for missing deadlines. Agencies must publish searchable versions of incorporated materials, provide full text for emergency rules in the Florida Administrative Code, and report annual licensing timelines. Senate President Ben Albritton described the bill as "conceptually boring" but bold. Lawmakers passed it unanimously, and it takes effect July 1. | Florida Launches Multistate College Accrediting Agency Florida is launching a multistate college and university accrediting agency—the Commission for Public Higher Education—to establish "rigorous, transparent, and adaptable outcomes-based accreditation standards and practices." The agency will be backed by public university systems from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. It will directly challenge existing regional accreditors. More states are expected to join the new initiative. "Who are these accreditors? Did you elect any of these accreditors to anything?" Gov. Ron DeSantis asked during a press conference at Florida Atlantic University. The governor said the new body will "upend the monopoly of the woke accreditation cartels" and prioritize student achievement and quality assurance. | Cat Illness Spreads Several animal shelters in Florida are grappling with outbreaks of feline distemper, or panleukopenia, a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus affecting cats. Several shelters, including Manatee County Animal Welfare, have temporarily halted cat adoptions and intakes to prevent further spread of the disease. Earlier this month, shelters in Tampa Bay and Marion County stopped adoptions. The virus spreads through body fluids, shared items like litter boxes and food bowls, and through human hands or clothes. Shelters urgently need foster homes for kittens who require a safe place to stay during the outbreak.
