Article Icon 1Petition to Eliminate Property Tax Clears Hurdle

The Ohio Attorney General's office approved the title and summary of a proposed state constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes, the first step toward a statewide vote.

The Ohio Ballot Board will now decide whether the proposal constitutes one or multiple amendments.

Supporters must then collect about 443,000 signatures from at least 44 of Ohio's 88 counties by early July to secure a place on the November ballot.

If passed, the amendment would add a section to Article XII of the Ohio Constitution, abolishing existing property taxes and prohibiting future property taxation.
