American Chosen as Pope Leo XIV

Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected Pope on Thursday, becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church.

Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old former missionary in Peru greeted cheering crowds in St. Peter's Square with a message of peace and unity. Watch the address here.

Prevost had previously shared posts critical of U.S. immigration policies and supportive of gun control, while maintaining traditional Catholic positions on abortion and euthanasia.

Despite political differences, Trump congratulated the new pope, calling his election a "great honor" for the U.S.

US, UK Strike Tariff Deal

The U.S. and the United Kingdom unveiled the framework of a trade deal Thursday, preserving a 10% import tariff while expanding U.S. access to British markets for beef, ethanol, and other goods.

In exchange, the U.K. will fast-track American imports, drop some non-tariff barriers, and buy $10 billion in Boeing aircraft. The first 100,000 U.K.-made cars imported annually will be capped at the lower tariff, with the rest subject to 25%.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it a "historic day." Though details remain unfinished, both leaders framed it as a win.

Following the announcement, stocks climbed, the Dow rose 254 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also posted solid gains.

White House Unveils Air Traffic Overhaul

President Trump's administration is proposing a sweeping modernization of the U.S. air traffic control system, citing fatal crashes and antiquated technology as urgent reasons for action.

The plan, unveiled Thursday, includes six new air traffic control centers, upgrades at more than 4,600 sites, and replacement of 600 radars.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy compared the update to "going from a flip phone to a smartphone," noting some FAA systems still use floppy disks.

The White House wants full upfront funding from Congress, estimated to start at $12.5 billion, with a projected completion by 2028.
