Bessent Touts Chip Push

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Trump administration is laser-focused on bringing more semiconductor manufacturing to Arizona.

Bessent made the remarks in an interview aired Thursday, a day after he toured the Frito-Lay plant in Casa Grande with House Speaker Mike Johnson and U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani.

Bessent said chip plant maintenance and precision work would bring high-paying jobs. His visit to the political battleground state comes ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm.

Arizona's electronics sector dates to 1949. Last month, TSMC raised its planned U.S. investment to $265 billion, anchored by its north Phoenix campus.

Grand Canyon Water Woes Deepen

Water restrictions went into effect at the Grand Canyon's South Rim after another break in the aging pipeline serving the park.

Repairs are underway, and park officials have not estimated when full service will be restored.

Downstream, record drought and reduced dam releases have cut Colorado River flows through the canyon, threatening wildlife and a nearly $50 million boating industry.

State leaders, meanwhile, pushed back on a new federal plan they say could reduce Arizona's Colorado River supply.

Valley Traffic Delays Worsen

A study found the average Phoenix commuter spent 76 hours stuck in traffic in 2024, 13 hours more than the national average.

Total delays across the metro area topped 203 million hours, a 6% jump from the year before, according to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute study.

Researchers point to population growth, rising vehicle miles, and heavier truck traffic. Phoenix ranked 11th nationally for total delay, up from 14th.

Relief projects are underway, including a Loop 303 extension into Goodyear.

Outside of the Valley, construction is squeezing drivers, with U.S. 60 east of Superior now closing intermittently during a bridge replacement.
