Hobbs Eyes Giles as Running Mate

Gov. Katie Hobbs is expected to name former Mesa Mayor John Giles as her lieutenant governor running mate. Her campaign has not confirmed the pick.

Giles led Mesa from 2014 to 2025. A former Republican, he has broken with the GOP before, backing Hobbs in 2022, Joe Biden in 2020, and Kamala Harris in 2024. He also spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Last week, Republican nominee Andy Biggs named Buckeye dairy farmer and former state Sen. Sine Kerr as his running mate.

Voters created the office of lieutenant governor by approving Proposition 131.

Salad and Go Closes Statewide

Salad and Go served its final customers on Wednesday, shutting all of its 70 drive-thru locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Court filings show Boersma Bros. LLC, tied to the founders of Dutch Bros Coffee, agreed to buy the assets with plans to convert the sites to coffee shops, pending approval by a bankruptcy judge.

Salad and Go opened in Gilbert in 2013, moved its headquarters to Coppell, Texas, then relocated back to the Phoenix area in January.

The company cited weak consumer demand, rising costs, past growth missteps, and industry fallout from a July Cyclospora outbreak in which it was not implicated.

Flagstaff Getting Federal Courthouse

A $70 million full-service federal courthouse is under construction in Flagstaff, a project that will save residents from needing to drive to Phoenix for most federal proceedings.

The 50,000-square-foot building sits off Route 66 and is expected to open and begin hearing cases as soon as March. Architects are designing the three-story, stone-clad building to Level III federal security standards, aiming for LEED Silver certification and net-zero energy performance.

Northern Arizona residents now drive two to five hours to the Sandra Day O'Connor courthouse in Phoenix for most federal court proceedings.
