More Communities Tighten Water Use

Golden declared a Stage 1 drought response, effective May 1, making it the latest Colorado community to implement water restrictions in the wake of an unseasonably warm winter.

Under the restrictions, residents can water lawns only twice weekly, between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., and must fix any leaks on their property within 10 days. Violations carry escalating fines up to $1,000 and possible water shutoff. Here's a list of rules.

Meanwhile, for the first time since 2021, Fort Collins is asking residents to voluntarily restrict water use through similar measures in a push to avoid mandatory cuts this or next year.

Mesa County is reducing irrigation of some public turf, aiming to save 7.5 million gallons. Fruita, similarly, is cutting water times across its parks by about 50%.

Statewide, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is warning of potential boating restrictions, ramp closures, and hazardous conditions at multiple state reservoirs due to low water levels.

Ticket Scam Draws Hundreds to Court

A text-message scam involving a fake court summons led nearly 200 confused residents to show up at the Denver City and County Building on Friday.

The fraudulent message claims recipients have outstanding traffic infractions, such as parking, speeding, or toll violations, and instructs them to either appear in court or scan a QR code and pay a $6 fine—an attempt to steal victims' payment information.

Rather than pay the fake fine, many showed up at the building seeking to clear their names or get more information. The surge was so significant that court officials posted signs on the door to inform visitors of the scam.

The scam prompted warnings from several agencies, including the court, which says it will never text people about unpaid fines or use QR codes for payments.

Snow Extends Ski Season

Arapahoe Basin announced Saturday it will stay open for an extra weekend, pushing its closing date from May 3 to May 10, after receiving 14 inches of snow last week.

Though it’s more than a month sooner than last year’s, the new closing date means A-Basin will be the last resort to close in Colorado. It had also planned to close May 3, the same day as Copper Mountain, which closed yesterday.

A-Basin will be closed Monday through Thursday and will reopen for the bonus weekend Friday through Sunday. No beginner terrain is available.

More significant mountain snow is possible Tuesday night into Wednesday, potentially impacting travel corridors, with a mix of rain and light snow at lower elevations.
