Good Morning! On this day in 1846, the U.S. Congress voted in favor of President James K. Polk’s request to declare war on Mexico in an ongoing dispute over Texas. What's the secret to a long, happy life? The late Dr. Howard Tucker, named by Guinness as the oldest doctor ever, narrowed it down to three rules in an essay he wrote just before his death. We're sharing them in Wisdom Wednesday below. What's your own non-negotiable for a good life? Reply to let us know. Later today, you’ll receive a message from our partner, Fisher Investments, with a free guide on seven retirement income strategies for investors with $1 million or more. It’s a simple way to compare your options. NativePath is sponsoring today’s edition with a simple approach designed to help address one of the most frustrating parts of getting older: those constant middle-of-the-night bathroom trips that interrupt your sleep and leave you dragging the next day. |

US Inflation Rate Rises to 3-Year High
U.S consumer prices rose 3.8% from a year ago, topping economists’ expectations and marking the steepest single-month surge since May 2023. Prices rose 0.6% on a monthly basis, easing from March's 0.9% pace, as the Iran war continued pushing fuel and food costs higher, new government data showed Tuesday. See the full breakdown here. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, came in at 2.8% annually and 0.4% monthly, both above forecasts, suggesting price pressures are spreading beyond the pump. Airline fares soared 20.7% over the past year as rising jet fuel costs were passed directly to travelers, while beef prices climbed 14.8% annually. |
Pentagon Surfaces Secret Nuclear Sub
The Pentagon made a rare and deliberate disclosure Monday, revealing the location of an Ohio-class nuclear-armed submarine in Gibraltar as a show of force toward Iran. Sub locations are typically classified. The Sixth Fleet released an image of the vessel docked at the British territory off Spain's southern coast. The Navy didn't officially name it, but ship watchers identified it as the USS Alaska, which can carry Trident II missiles with a range exceeding 4,500 miles. The disclosure came a day after President Trump rejected Iran's latest peace offer as "totally unacceptable" and said the ceasefire was on "life support." The Pentagon is also weighing renaming the war "Operation Sledgehammer" if the ceasefire collapses and combat resumes. |
What a Gas Tax Cut Saves by State
President Trump said Monday he'd back suspending the 18.4-cent federal gas tax as the national average hit $4.50 a gallon, up more than 50% since the Iran war began. How much drivers would save from a gas tax cut depends on where they live. The average tax burden across all states is 51 cents per gallon, ranging from 5% of the pump price in Alaska to 17% in Illinois. See a map of how much each state would save. Even if every tax came off, gas would still cost about 35% more than before the war. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., pledged legislation to suspend the federal tax. Georgia is currently the only state with an active suspension of the state gas tax. That suspension expires on May 19.
