Midterm Election Day is Tuesday, and polls will be open across North Carolina from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Anyone in line by 7:30 p.m. can vote.

More than 2.6 million people, about a third of registered voters, had cast ballots through Friday, a pace more than 37% ahead of the 2022 midterms.

Every voter will see the U.S. Senate race and a U.S. House race, and all 170 General Assembly seats are up, along with three constitutional amendments: limits on local property tax increases, a 3.5% cap on the state income tax rate, and photo ID for all voters, including those voting by mail.

Bring a photo ID and vote at your assigned precinct. There’s no same-day registration on Election Day. You can find your polling place and sample ballot using the State Board of Elections’ Voter Search tool.

Mail ballots must reach your county board of elections by 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant Friday at North Carolina State University’s Sigma Nu Beta Tau fraternity house amid an ongoing criminal investigation into hazing allegations.

Campus police, assisted by the State Bureau of Investigation and other agencies, searched during homecoming weekend.

The chapter is under interim suspension while the university reviews the claims under its student code of conduct. Allegations first surfaced earlier in the week, with an anonymous report describing physical abuse and forced consumption of substances. Details remain limited as the probe continues.

University officials stated they do not tolerate hazing and prioritize student safety, declining further comment to protect the investigation. Wake County prosecutors have indicated charges may follow. Sigma Nu’s national organization said it is cooperating fully.

Article Icon 1Lighthouse Challenge Extended into Spring

The North Carolina Lighthouse Challenge has pushed its deadline to March 31, 2027, after a September nor’easter knocked many participants off schedule. More than 1,000 people have signed up to visit all 10 of the state’s lighthouses.

The free challenge, sponsored by the Northern Outer Banks for America’s 250th anniversary, sends participants to all 10 lights, from Currituck and Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke and smaller river beacons. Climbing isn’t required, but a photo at each stop is.

More than 40 people from seven states have already finished, earning a certificate and a free climb. A September nor'easter blew enough travelers off course that organizers tacked on three extra months.

The routes have been as varied as the coast. One family sailed much of it along the Intracoastal Waterway and Pamlico Sound, while another participant marked her birthday with a weeklong road trip, sleeping in a specially outfitted Jeep Wrangler.
