| Hi friends, | Happy Holidays! | I write to you from Esalen Institute—a wellness retreat center perched along the cliffs of Big Sur, California—filled with gratitude. This sanctuary is a birthplace of transformative ideas, where pioneers like Carl Jung (Jungian psychology), Abraham Maslow (hierarchy of needs), and Aldous Huxley (author of Brave New World) explored the edges of human potential. | Their spirit of discovery reminds me why we began this journey a year ago. Together, week by week, we've delved into the profound dimensions of human flourishing, from the profundity of our attachment styles to the neurochemistry of trauma. | Your engagement and curiosity have made this exploration vibrant and purposeful. | Here at Esalen, I've been reflecting on a quote by Aldous Huxley that captures the ethos of How Humans Flourish: | "What would have happened to a child of 170 I.Q. born into a Paleolithic family at the time of, say, the cave paintings of Lascaux? Well, quite obviously, he could have been nothing except hunter and a food gatherer. There was no other opportunity for him to be anything else. | The biologists have shown us that, physiologically and anatomically, we are pretty much the same as we were twenty thousand years ago and that we are using fundamentally the same equipment to produce incredibly different results. We have in the course of these twenty thousand years actualized an immense number of things which at that time and for many, many centuries thereafter were wholly potential and latent… | This, I think, gives us reason for tempered optimism that there are still a great many potentialities—for rationality, for affection and kindliness, for creativity—still lying latent… Perhaps, if we set about things the right way, we might be able to produce extraordinary things out of this strange piece of work that man is." | This vision of untapped potential drives everything we do at break*through. | As I pause this newsletter for a few weeks to recalibrate for 2025, I invite you to share your thoughts. What have you loved? What topics should we explore next? Are you still enjoying this format or would you prefer something other than a book of the month? Feel free to reply directly to this email—I'd love to hear from you. | Thank you for a year of flourishing together. Here's to unlocking even more potential in the year ahead. | With immense gratitude, | | P.s. How Humans Flourish is a dedicated project nurtured with love and intention.
