Article Icon 1Christian Camp Settles Gender Lawsuit

Camp IdRaHaJe, a Christian summer camp, dismissed its lawsuit against the Colorado Department of Early Childhood after the state agreed to formally exempt religious organizations from new gender-identity regulations.

Under the regulations, certain public places must allow children access to showering, sleeping, and dressing facilities based on gender identity rather than biological sex.

The camp filed a lawsuit last month alleging this requirement violates its religious freedom and would force it to shut down.

As part of the settlement, Colorado affirmed that religious spaces, including the camp, are not considered "places of public accommodation" and are therefore not subject to the law.

Article Icon 1Douglas County Rejects Home Rule

Voters in Douglas County rejected an effort to become Colorado's third home rule county by a margin of more than 2-to-1 in a special election Tuesday.

Nearly 90,000 people cast ballots. Unofficial results, with 98% of ballots counted, show about 71% opposed the measure and 29% supported it.

The election was the first of its kind since Weld and Pitkin counties adopted home rule in the 1970s. The outcome marks a victory for opponents who raised concerns about unanswered questions and the concentration of power.

Commissioner George Teal, who backed the effort, noted that home rule rarely succeeds on the first attempt and said he would continue advocating for its adoption.

Article Icon 1UCCS Student Leads NASA Laundry Project

A University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) student is leading a NASA-funded project to revolutionize how laundry is done in space.

Blake MacDonald, a biology student at UCCS, is the chief scientist of Team 25, a research group that won a $10,000 NASA grant to kickstart the Supercritical CO2 Recapture Bioscrubber and Detergentless Ultra-cleaning Bay (SCRBaDUB).

The SCRBaDUB cleans textiles by passing supercritical CO2 through the fabric. MacDonald says this method could reduce waste, enhance working conditions, and cut costs on extended crewed missions.

Team 25 will use the grant to develop a functional prototype, which they hope will open the door to further funding and research.
