A miniature dachshund named Valerie has survived 16 months alone in the rugged wilderness of Kangaroo Island, off Australia’s southern coast, after escaping during a family camping trip in November 2023. Take a look at the photos of the pup here.

Her owners, visiting from Broken Hill—about 850 miles away—left her in a playpen while they went fishing. Valerie slipped out and disappeared into the bush. They searched for days but eventually had to return home.

Despite harsh terrain, predators, and ongoing rescue efforts, the 8-pound dog has evaded capture. Volunteers from Kangala Wildlife Rescue continue tracking her using cameras and food traps, hoping to bring her home.

Though her survival is surprising, experts say dachshunds are tough and resourceful.
